nutcracker suite

whole nuts: pecan, walnut, almond, hazelnut (left to right)

nuts, naked: pecan, walnut, almond, hazelnut
Here's another winter foodie past-time! We have a whole bag of whole nuts to crack open this winter: pecans, walnuts, almonds. My favorite is the hazelnut, it has a sweet creaminess to it, on top of the crunchy bite. My uncle says the walnuts and pecans look like brains - he's an orthopedic surgeon, please excuse the comparison.

What a great bunch of pics! I honestly never knew the pecan shell was so pink. That is nuts, pardon the pun.

In terms of your assessment, you are dead-on with hazelnut, defintely extremely delicious. However, I find it more seasonal and not a good all year round nut, like the almond is. Almonds are reliably tasty all the time in my eyes, can't get enough of them!

Great post. (Especially the dig at orthopods) Hope you having a happy and healthy new year!

Never knew hazelnuts were so seasonal! Mmm, really craving some toasted nuts right now. Some spicy toasted nuts with some full-bodied red wine would be just so fittingly cozy in this weather.

Thanks for the new year wishes! And happy new year to you too!
